A construction roller is also known as a road roller, compaction roller, or steam roller. Although these machines are not powered by steam anymore, they used to be and, in some cases, the name stuck.

A roller at its essence is a heavy wheel that is used to level out and compact terrain, soil, dirt, asphalt, or any other kind of foundation or base material.

There are a few different types of rollers including single and double-drum rollers.

There are also Padfoot and vibrating rollers

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator.
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used.
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
  • Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements.
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for roller use
  • Prepare the roller for use and operate machinery safely and efficiently
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the Work area
  • Operate machinery safely and efficiently

  • Demonstrate Knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for Machine transportation
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

  • Drive in a straight line 15m in length.
  • Drive over uneven and sloping terrain.
  • Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications.
  • Time allowed is 1 hour.
