A forward tipping dumper is commonly used on construction sites. It comes in range of different sizes and capability’s, it is used to transport large loads of materials across a site, usually on rough, undulating terrain. Its ability to handle a mixture of terrain and carry large loads makes it a flexible piece of equipment.
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator.
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used.
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions.
- Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements.
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for forward tipping dumper use.
- Prepare the forward tipping dumper for use and operate safely and efficiently.
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area.
- Attach and set trailers, ready for operation.
- Environmental considerations.
- Storage and transport of implements and attachments.
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures.
- Suitable and safe area to operate and manoeuvre dumper.

- Pre use and operational checks
- Manoeuvre through a chicane applying the full steering range in both forward and reverse direction (un-laden and laden)
- Position for loading operation x 4
- Stop and start on the gradient whilst travelling up hill
- Stop and start on the gradient whilst travelling down hill
- Discharge the load over an edge or in excavation x 2
- Discharge the load to form a stockpile x 2
- Reverse the dumper (min 30m) in a straight line and through a restriction (unladen and laden)
- Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
- Time allowed is 1 hour
