Plant loader securers are responsible for securing plant equipment and machinery onto vehicles for transport these machines could be load wheeled, tracked or roller machines, they must do this by checking the load is properly secured.
Unsafe loads on vehicles injure more than 1,200 people a year and cost UK businesses millions of pounds in damaged goods. There has been an increasing number of accidents involving mobile plant during loading/unloading or during transportation resulting in fatalities.
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator.
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used and relevant legislation.
- Be able to identify different types of transport, explain their purpose, the major components, basic construction, controls, and terminology.
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements.
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the loading / unloading area
- Ensure that the transporter is correctly configured in readiness for loading and unloading.
- Explain hazards that may exist in the work area and how to avoid them
- Agree a method of communication and use it.
- Load or direct items of plant onto and off transport vehicle.
- Arrange and secure items of plant on transport vehicle ready for transport on a public highway.
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures.
- Suitable and safe area to operate machinery.
- Correct training to operate machinery.
- Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork.
- Suitable welfare facilities.
- Suitable Transport vehicle for the plant.
- Certified Tracked, wheeled, roller machinery suitable for task.

- 5 written questions.
- 4 marks per question.
- 80% pass mark required.
- Pre use and operational checks.
- Set the transporter ready to receive a load.
- Load and unload 1 x Tracked construction type machine.

- Load and unload 1 x compaction type machine (ie roller).
- Secure loads to confirm with machine and legislative requirements.
- End of task and machinery checks.
- Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications.
- Time allowed is 2 hours.
